Thousands of wildlife lovers are expected to attend the first ever Scottish Birdfair later this month.
Held in the stunning grounds of Hopetoun House, South Queensferry on the 19th and 20th May, the event has been billed as a ‘must’ for anyone interested in Scotland’s birds, animals, and wild places.
Organised by RSPB Scotland, one of the key attractions of Scottish Birdfair will be the magnificent setting on the west lawn of Hopetoun House, where visitors can browse and shop from around 80 wildlife related exhibiting stands, ranging from the latest in wildlife technology, to holidays, optics, books, artwork and much more.
Throughout each day there will be a wide range of informative talks from conservation experts, guided walks and special workshops, as well as locally sourced food and cooking demonstrations.
Children will also be thoroughly entertained with a range of fun-packed activities including storytelling, puppet shows, pony rides and guided walks.
All the proceeds raised over the weekend will go towards conserving and protecting Scottish wildlife.
Stuart Housden, Director of RSPB Scotland said: The Scottish Birdfair is not just a celebration of Scotland’s amazing wildlife, it provides an ideal opportunity for people to learn more about nature and enjoy a family day away from city life. As well as fascinating talks, there will be tips to try out in the garden, guided walks exploring the stunning grounds of Hopetoun House and interactive workshops for all ages. Whether you are new to watching wildlife, or an old hand like me, there will be something for everybody at the Scottish Birdfair.”
With the growing popularity of ‘green tourism’, it is hoped the event will attract up to 5000 people, generating new revenue for the region and raising vital funds for Scottish conservation. The RSPB wants this to be the start of something big, with the Fair becoming a showcase for Scotland’s natural environment for tourism providers and visitors from home and abroad.
James Bailey, Chair of Visit West Lothian added: “It is a great honour for West Lothian to host the very first Scottish Birdfair which is taking place at one of Scotland’s finest country homes. Hopetoun House is one of our landmark attractions and will provide a stunning setting. We look forward to welcoming both new and old visitors to the event in May, which is already set to be a great success. The Scottish Birdfair is a fantastic event to add to our ever increasing calendar of activities taking place across West Lothian.”
