Protect Migration Through Malta
Malta is a an important stepping-stone for migrating raptors. Buskett is Malta's oldest and most important woodland and a bird sanctuary, yet hunters kill raptors, even there! The authorities do little to stop them so a Raptor camp has been held there for the last two years. Foreign birdwatchers observe migration and report illegal hunting to the police, getting the law enforced and showing the potential of eco-tourism to the Maltese authorities. 2001 camp - 7th to 23rd September.

Put a cork in it!
Conservationists warn of a 'cork crash' by 2015 - wine-buyers are urged to avoid plastic stoppers. A new independent report commissioned by the RSPB warns that if the use of plastic wine stoppers continues to increase at the current rate, the cork industry could 'crash' in less than 15 years, resulting in the disappearance of one of Europe's most valuable wildlife habitats. Wine drinkers throughout Europe could make a real difference to conservation just by insisting on cork stoppers!

Foot & Mouth Keeps UK Birders at home
11th March 2001. We all have a responsibility to make every effort to minimise the spread of 'Foot & Mouth' infection, so we bring this information to the attention of anyone birding in the UK. More and more birders and birding organisations are advising staying at home or only visiting sites to sea watch or at reserves where there is absolutely no risk of wild mammals or livestock being close by. Please bear in mind that deer are very widespread and can carry this devastating disease. The last thing anyone wants is for a birder to carry the disease to a new site.

Migration experts in a FLAP
Fatal Light Awareness Program - Many birds migrate at night, when predators retire and winds tend to die down. The 11/00 issue of Architecture Magazine says: "Empire State Building officials, take note: Chicago's Hancock Centre has doused its ornamental night time lighting to save the nearly 1,500 birds that - nightly - meet abrupt deaths when they crash into the tower during migration season, mistaking its illumination for stars or the moon." Find out what YOU can do. I wish that light pollution’s effect on birds was taken as seriously in the UK.

Portugal – Imperial Eagles’ Habitat Under Threat...
A campaign is underway to limit the destruction about to be visited upon the Portuguese countryside. The process of land and soil clearing in the future Alqueva reservoir area in Southern Portugal already started on the 19th of February. This ongoing process will cause devastating ecological harm, destroying hundreds of thousands of oak trees (including several ancient specimens), and will become the largest ever tree-felling exercise in Europe (over 1.400.000 trees are to be cut). The area is home to many species of endangered animals including many birds such as Imperial Eagles etc. Read on and sign the petition!

New US Record Set
In Texas, on April 18th, 2001 a team of four Canadians identified 233 species of birds in one day, toppling the long standing 23 year old North American birding 'big day' record. The original record of 231 species verified in a single calendar day was set in California on April 29th, 1978. The record breaking team, sponsored by Kowa Optics, was comprised of four Canadians, all from Ontario: Tom Hince, Paul Pratt, Bruce Di Labio, and designated driver Ethan Meleg. "The Canucks" chose a route based in south Texas in mid April where the combination of arriving spring migrants, tropical residents, and lingering winter birds make for rich birding opportunities. For full story turn to our Listing & Racing section - "Big Days" page.

Guatemala Appeal
A part of the Guatemalan Pacific Slope Montane rainforest is under threat and you can help. Most of this habitat has been converted to agriculture over the last 100 years and many interesting bird species are rapidly disappearing (White-eared Ground-Sparrow, Long-tailed Manikin, Ruddy Quail-Dove, Violet Sabrewing, etc.) But especially interesting is a nesting troop of Endemic AZURE-RUMPED TANAGERS! This bird is globally endangered and considered the most endangered and important conservation priority bird for the country. It is restricted to the Pacific slope of Guatemala and adjacent Chiapas Mexico between 1000m and 1700m.
