The reserves and protected forests extend over 86% area of the territory and forest covers more than 92%. About half of the forests has been set aside as Tribal Reserves, National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries, which are inviolate. Mangroves occupy nearly 12% of the territory. There are more than 150 endemic plant and animals species. It is a birding paradise with around 271 species of which 39 are endemic.

The Forest of Andaman and Nicobar Islands have been categorised as one of the highest potential productivity zones in India owing to a favourable climate and edaphic factors present in these islands. Forests area is nearly 86% of its geographical area and the forest cover is about 92%. The non-forest area is also frequently covered with trees. Out of the 86% forest area, 56% is still maintained in its pristine glory in the form of coastal forest belts (13%); small islets and protected areas (7%); Tribal Reserves (36%); National Parks and Sanctuaries, Biosphere Reserves (Over-lapping).

The islands make an ideal birding holiday. In two weeks you have plenty of time to see the birds and to relax with some snorkelling and swimming in a very beautiful, quiet environment. It would have been the perfect place to bring my non-birding girlfriend. The reason it is so unexploited is that it is difficult to reach. The only way is by ship or plane from Calcutta or Chennai. Soon however the international airport should be open and it will be easy accessible. Now or soon after the airport opens will be a good time to visit, before the inevitable commercialisation of the islands takes place...
